Central Kitsap Middle + High School

Sliverdale, WA | 2,100 Students | Completed Fall 2019

Project Role: Conceptual Design - Construction Documentation - QA

Challenge: How might we maximize the steeply sloped site and provide distinct identities to a joint facility Middle and High School building.

Solutions: The new site design allows for vehicular and bus circulation to all parts of the sloping site, two synthetic track/field facilities, a baseball field, a softball field, and 8 tennis courts.

A crushed rock pathway circumnavigates the site, inviting the community to explore the forested hillsides, stormwater wetlands, fields, and views of Mount Rainier that make this new hilltop campus a true community destination.  Plazas and other pedestrian spaces on-site allow for a smooth transition between the building and its surroundings.

Outdoor plaza spaces provide social spaces for students.

Iterations

Design is a process, and this main features of this project came together by sketching concepts, and testing the usabliity of the concepts through vehicle and pedestrian analysis. As the concepts were stress tested, more details became fleshed out and the designs were pushed further along.

On the right is the Middle School Courtyard. This is the primary bus dropoff, play space, and access to several buildings.

It is fun to see how an original concept changes over time.

The building was located to maximize outdoor views of the Sound.

By using the building as a visual barrier, we seperated the Middle School field from the High School field.

We seperated the arrival sequence for each student body. This is the entry for High School Students.
